NH GeoInstitute - October Event on Ground Improvement

October 27, 2014

The Granite State GeoInstitute chapter held a half-day seminar on Ground Improvement at the Concord Department of Transportation on Tuesday October 21, 2014.    The four hour seminar was attended by eighty local engineers and was presented by two engineers from Menard USA.

Topics included:

  • Overview of Ground Improvement and Why We Need Ground Improvement
  • Ground Improvement Techniques
  • Differences in Design Methodology between Rigid and Soft Inclusions
  • Analysis of Single Element Load Testing for Ground Improvement
  • GeoStructural Modeling

Four PDH credits were awarded to attendees.

There was great discussion on the use of stone columns within organic soils.   Many engineers noted that the inclusions are intended to behave like piles and should be subject to the same design standards.
