The screw pile advanced down into the ground. This piling will ultimately screw through the fill soils and anchor into the better soils below. Pile lengths varied from 18 to 30 feet at this site near Boston, Massachusetts.


After a few minutes, the first section of screw is advanced into the ground. Additional sections will be bolted on and the assembly will be driven deeper.

Screw Piles provide deep foundation support for projects planned over poor soils.   This technology is especially useful in landfilled areas, such as Boston and the surrounding communities including Cambridge, Newton, Brookline, and Quincy.   Vast amounts of swampland were filled-in to accommodate the need for more land near the busy port of Boston.  Many existing buildings are founded on deep pilings, including both residential and commercial structures.  

Helical Piles are another term used to describe a screw pile.  This piling element essentially consists of a screw-like assembly that is drilled into the ground, through the poor fill and into the better soils below.  Screw piles can also be a cost-effective solution to traditional Drilled Piles in the right soil conditions.
