Geotechnical Engineering is the branch of Civil Engineering that specifically focuses on the interaction of soils and structures.  Geotechnical Engineers essentially evaluate the subsoils for structural and foundation bearing characteristics.  This applies for building foundations, retaining walls, and any other soils related problems including water flow.  EFT actively participates in both the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Geo-Institute as well. 

Our background in specialty foundation design and support helps us provide unique solutions to challenging problems, including:

  • Settling Foundation Repair:  Even with today's standards, many foundations are still poured over poor bearing soils, including uncontrolled fill, tree stumps, urban fill, and organic soils. 
  • Pressure Grouting:  This industry term is used for describing both grouting for concrete repair and soil stabilization as well. Poor soils and natural soils can be structurally improved through a wide variety of grouting technologies.  Soil stabilization can be an effective method to strengthening a subgrade with limited site conditions.
  • Helical Piles can provide cost-effective solutions to foundation support over poor soils, especially in the Greater Boston area, which was greatly filled-in during the 18th and 19th centuries.
  • Urethane Foam Injections:  Concrete floor slabs can be prone to excessive settlement when poured over poor soils.   This is especially true for warehouse and commercial floors, where uneven settlement can be extremely disruptive to business operations.  EFT provides specialty foam injections to help re-level sunken floors. 
  • Earth Support:  Large excavations, especially in urban areas, may require specialty shoring support.   This is critical when excavating nearby streets and structures.
