Helical Piers MA | Sound Stage Foundation Improvements

September 24, 2012

This Sound Stage was being built over a deposit of organic soils in Massachusetts. Helical piers were used to help provide foundation support for the structure over the poor soils.

This helical pier is being installed at an angle, providing uplift resistance for the roof structure. This project located in Swampscott, Massachusetts.

Geotechnical Soils Problem:  This Sound Stage was planned to house an indoor movie set for a major movie production in Swampscott, Massachusetts.  The site contained buried swampland and was not suitable for foundation support.    A rapid solution was needed to support the structure, as the project was two weeks behind schedule and construction of this site could not progress without the foundation problem solved.

Helical PiersEngineered Foundation Technologies reviewed the project documents and provided a design/build solution, consisting of a combination of helical piers and tiedown anchors.   As the roof structure was over 80 feet tall and located adjacent to the ocean, secure foundations were extremely important to ensuring a successful project.

A total of 80 helical piers were installed within 5 working days.  The production company was rapidly back to work and completed the project with minimal delay to the completion date.   Filming was completed just before Labor Day.
